TIPS: Unhide hidden files (caused by viruses)

This, by chance, came into my mind after a friend of mine lost all his files because his memory card had been infected by nasty viruses (something like trojan or worm or Win32 sality... brrr... which can duplicate the files and hide the real files). So, he asked me how to get those files back. Of course i had successfully retrieved his "missing" files back because i know how to do that. Ngehehehe...

As far as i know, ~ok, am not an expert or what-so-ever, but, i know just a little bit about this problem ~ those files aren't missing, they're still stored in the memory card or flash drive, ~if you're that lucky~ it's just that, the viruses changed it into hidden files... and you can't view the file if you open the memory card or flash drive using normal method. I don't know how the viruses change the attribute of the files and i don't have the feeling to discover more. All i care is, the viruses hide the files and all i want is to recover it back.

So, here's a simple step which i used to recover the files.I used my own thumb drive as a sample.

1) Of course, scan the flash drive with antivirus first. For most cases, the files/folders are changed into .exe extension files. You can't open the files because... er.. i don't know, it's just that you can't open the file.
* some of the files turned into shortcut...

2) then use your imagination to imagine you files are back. Keh~ just kidding.

3) Of course la no such thing could happen. Ignore step 2. Open cmd. If you don't know what is that, go to run and type cmd. Or, point to start --> programs --> accessories --> command prompt.

FYI, you have the advantages if you know lot about command prompt.  For all i know, you can retrieve a password, copy and delete files and modify your system. Ahaks... i said too much.

4) Find the drive letter in which your flash drive connected to. Eg. F:, G:, so on and so forth.

5) In the command prompt, type G: (or whatever the drive letter is, it depends on your USB drive, in this case, i choose G:)

6) Then, type in attrib -s -h /s /d *.*

For a clear picture, see below..

7) Hit ENTER wait for a moment and lattarada~~ check your flash drive to see the said missing files.

I just hope it works as it worked for me...

And I posted another simple version of this >> Unhide hidden files -another solution- <<

P/S: A while back when i don't know all about these things, i tend to format my drive to get rid of the viruses. And so, all the files got rid too.

  3. Are you sure? does your computer detect the usb drive when you plug-in? If it does, then you might not type the right path, i mean the drive path.

  5. i don't know it is so easy to retrive the file again. can you do more tips for computer?

  6. attrib -s -h /s /d *.* command makes all the folders including system related folders to appear. which is bit messy, by using dir/ah command we can easily identify the Virus effected directories easily.

This command helps to unhide the hidden folder which are greatly effected by virus in Flash Drives .

  7. Thanks for highlighting that idea! really appreciate it ^.^

Hope u can help me to recover my files..

  10. @Mrfe : after you recover the all the files, copy/backup the files (the original one, not the shortcut) to some folder in the PC then format the memory card. after formatting, copy the files back into the memory. It may work. because i tend to do that.

  16. I followed your post and it recovered and showed me three files which are: Thumbs.db,autorun.inf and JHO(8GB) (Shortcut)., i then opened jho(8GB) Which should contain all my files but it prompts me this NO HOPE message : "There was a problem opening -$WACZ.FAT., just before reformatting, i tried to add another code to command prompt which is: attrib -s -h -r /s /d and hit enter,.. when i opened my drive, it showed me a Folder without folder name, i opened it and BOOM, all my files were hiding someplace in my drive...
    these are the steps:

    in command prompt, type:
    attrib -s -h /s /d *.* --hit enter
    attrib -s -h -r /s /d --hit enter

that's in exact HOPE for me...

  21. Anon (Apr,16 07:03 pm) --> God willing yes. as long as you didn't format the flash drive yet.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Anon (Apr 17, 05:15 pm) if i am not mistaken that *.chk files are actually the files fragment... as for me, i never actually pay attention to the *.chk extension. but, if you want to open the file, then you need a software that can read the *chk file.

  23. @Mrfe Aldovio
It might be a lame way but, try this...
go to "FOLDER OPTIONS" --> VIEW tab --> ADVANCED SETTINGS --> un-tick
the HIDE PROTECTED OPERATING SYSTEMS FILES.
If you can't see your files there, that means, the files are no longer
there. then try to look at the folder where you backup/copy the files.
After you have done, don't forget to re-tick the HIDE PROTECTED
    OPERATING SYSTEM FILES.

  24. not working for my external... aiyoo..

    ReplyDelete
  25. @Katak Prince : how is it not working? like what? so far i use this, it's working just fine. unless the files are no longer there. why not try to see if the files are there --> http://ezelovesse7en.blogspot.com/2012/01/tips-are-you-sure-your-file-is-missing.html. or maybe you can use certain software to change the attribute of the hidden files.

One thing that need to be done before unhide the folder, you need to scan and fix it by your antivirus. I use KIS

  60. hi there i using win7 n i follow the step u mention but i face the problem is when i run comd F DRIVE (which my thumbdrive is) it just pop out the f window after that i type type the commad is just appear all C drive file plz help

    ReplyDelete
  61. @ Mel. Hi too.
First of all, i would like to ask if there is any message appears after you do the command thing? or was it automatically change into the C: path without telling you anything.
Why don't you try this instead --> http://ezelovesse7en.blogspot.com/2012/01/tips-are-you-sure-your-file-is-missing.html
though you might not be able to change the attribute, but you still can use the hidden files.
As for another option, after you've viewed all the hidden files, copy all the files into the new folder (maybe it will be easier to put the new folder in the desktop and rename the folder) and then run the command again by using the path of the new renamed-folder.
sorry, i can only think of this method if the posted method didn't work. well, it's worth trying.

    ReplyDelete
  62. This command prompt worked wonders! retrieved all my files sent by a worm into a hidden folder, with a shortcut to the files.. my antivirus deleted the shortcut and i was left with an apparently empty drive! Thank you for helping me retrieve that!

*note though: for people who are using it on external drives, it takes awhile for it to work. Dont give up so soon after you press enter and nothing pops up

    ReplyDelete

  126. Did all this and still no love. DOS window it states a bunch of "Unable to change attribute..." blah blah blah file name stuff.

Yesterday the files were not there, then my computer found a virus. It supposedly took care of the virus and the files were back. Now they are gone again the day after.

I have two external drives that's doing the same thing too. The second one lists some, "Access denied" statements.

I am the admin. I tried to run spybot but it wouldn't let me do certain scans as it said I'm not the admin. What the heck is going on here? I use a mix of MS Security Essentials, SpyBot, and Sophos

    ReplyDelete
  127. @Johnno... I have no idea how is it not working the way it supposed to. but, i have another suggestion. Although you might not be able to change the attribute, you still can view the files, if it is possible. here --> http://ezelovesse7en.blogspot.com/2012/01/tips-are-you-sure-your-file-is-missing.html
or, you can download certain software to change those files back. the only software i had used was Altap salamander. why don't you give it a try.

    1. It might because the thumbdrive is write protected.. I suggest you try this http://ezelovesse7en.blogspot.com/2012/01/tips-are-you-sure-your-file-is-missing.html & copy the files into a new location. If they are still hidden, try the command again on the new location.

However, every time I unplug and plug my flash drive back in, the same thing happens. Any ideas on how I can get rid of this?

    1. Does it apply to another flash drive? And, if you plug the flash drive to another pc/ laptop, does the same thing happen?
If the other flash drive also show the same result, that means your pc/ laptop is infected. Maybe you should scan the pc/laptop with antivirus.
